I’ll meet all the new charges by selling my vote
Whoever wins the next election will be obliged in any case to implement severe austerity measures.
Most likely once again it will be the ‘sandwich class’ that will have to carry the can for the very poor and ultra-rich. Apparently extra tax on incomes in excess of €100,000 is unthinkable or we’d see another Flight of the Earls (or Robber Barons, take your pick).
For the first time ever I feel like not voting if only to register my disgust. Soon the hopefuls will come knocking on my door promising me a better life in return for my vote.
For far too long I have undervalued this singular tool of democracy. But no more. Next time my vote will be up for auction to the highest bidder. I am setting the reserve price at €3,000 — payable in advance, plus VAT and income tax at the going rate, returnable only if I get a higher bid.
With a few exceptions I don’t really care who makes it past the post next time. The €3,000 (or more, remember it’s an auction) will go some way towards offsetting the effects of all the new taxes, duties, excises, tolls, water charges and so on I’m expected to pay for bailing out the speculators and banks. I’ll be making a note of any candidate who won’t bid and will make sure to vote for their rivals if my reserve price isn’t met. I’d advise everyone else who feels the same as I do to tell them ‘no cash, no vote’.
This time I want something concrete in advance. I’ve had enough promises.
