Delusional thinking on national debt

KEVIN McCarthy wrongly states (Letters, September 3) that “our public service has contributed massively to the reduction of our national debt”.

Delusional thinking on national debt

The sad fact is that, in spite of all the so-called tough measures, our deficit has actually worsened this year.

When our national income was €55 billion our public sector wage bill of €20bn was manageable, but when our income dropped to €30bn, it was simply unsustainable.

To bridge the gap by borrowing from moneylenders at penal rates puts us on the fast track to disaster.

All householders know that when their income drops they must cut their cloth to measure.

Mr McCarthy’s plan to spend our way out of the crisis is as crazy as an alcoholic trying to drink his way back to sobriety.

Delusional wishful thinking will not solve our financial problems.

Mr McCarthy should open his eyes, check the depth of the hole we’re in and stop digging.
