Some L-drivers learn faster than others

THOMAS Harrington, an advanced driving examiner, says (Letters, August 11) I contradict myself, but there is nothing contradictory in saying that driving lessons are a good idea but it should not be compulsory to have a minimum of 20 hours, although he claims 40 hours are needed.

Some L-drivers learn faster than others

Some people are fast learners or are able to learn from books, DVDs and other drivers.

The driving test is designed to establish the candidate has a certain minimum level of skill and knowledge – how this standard is achieved is irrelevant.

He refers to my “silly statement that bad driving is deliberate…” In fact I said “dangerous driving is deliberate in most cases”. Legally the requirement of dangerous or reckless driving is “mens rea” – literally guilty mind (intent).

Mr Harrington says €700 is a small price to pay for the high number of deaths and injuries in other EU countries which already have these measures in place. This is a obvious contradiction, especially when Ireland’s road safety record is one of the best.
