I have good reason to thank public services
However I wish to express my very grateful thanks to members of the public service.
On the night of October 19/20 last year I was involved in a traffic accident which resulted in my vehicle being propelled, with me in it, through the balustrade of St Patrick’s Bridge in Cork.
The actions of the fire and ambulance services and the gardaí undoubtedly saved my life.
Much of what I understand about my rescue comes from third parties, but I believe the fire service had much work to do promptly to keep me from toppling into the river before they could cut me free from the vehicle.
I still recall the calming voice of the female garda as she ascertained my details and the comforting voice of the ambulance crew member as he informed me about what was going on.
It struck me that here were men and women who are public service workers (and therefore judged as “that lot”) who go out to work every night not knowing what awaits them but, in the most professional way, are prepared to work their socks off to save lives.
As it is I am in the public service myself and understand I may not enjoy the favour of the private sector, but I have never been prouder of my association with such people. Therefore I can only say, PS, I thank you.
