Disaster fraudsters - Callous parasites

JUST as every cloud has a silver lining every disaster presents dishonest parasites with an a opportunity to profit from others’ difficulties.

Last Saturday night a group of women showed how callous we can be even in the face of the most appalling tragedy.

Gardaí are investigating what is believed to be a group fraudsters posing as charity workers who took up a collection for Haiti over the weekend. Women, who claimed to represent the Red Cross, collected money in Limerick pubs on Friday night. They claimed they were part of a nationwide collection for disaster relief.

Even though history is littered with examples of the worst kind of opportunism it is difficult to have to accept that such utterly callous deceit could be exercised in this community.

Let us all hope they are caught and pay a significant penalty for their callous opportunism.
