What the Government needs to do

IN referring to our present economic crisis, SIPTU leader Jack O'Connor says “We do not suggest for a moment that there is some kind of pain-free or risk-free formula for overcoming the difficulties, indeed, we believe there is no viable alternative to an agreement between all parties on a fairer, better way.”

What the Government needs to do

In the main I agree with Jack O'Connor. However, I will argue that before any discussions are entered into the following things must be done:

* The Government must rush through legislation that will enable them to claw back the huge bonuses, golden handshakes and outrageous pension pots enjoyed by the wealthy elite in our society. nThe Government must rush through legislation to get cash that wealthy elites have stashed away in off-shore tax-havens and tax it with interest. This should apply to those responsible for bringing the country to its knees.

* NAMA should be cancelled , and the 54 billion intended to purchase worthless property assets should be used instead to support the real economy and defend and provide jobs.

* The Government must ban the construction of any more blocks of unwanted flats and office buildings , and build council houses for the 65,000 citizens on the waiting list, as well as building much-needed schools, hospitals, and other vital infrastructure that we are now deficient in, including a world- class broadband facility.

Oh yes, and the Government and employers must roundly condemn all those who are trying to set the public and private sector workers against each other.
