McCarthy suggestion - An inquiry is justified

ONE of the unnerving aspects of our current difficulties has been the near universal confusion about how we got into this mess or how we can get out of it.

That is why Colm McCarthy’s suggestion yesterday that we should have an Oireachtas inquiry into what went wrong should be supported.

The catastrophe brought about by the comfortable relationships between banking, politics and property development have brought us to the edge of bankruptcy.

Therefore we should do all we can to establish what went wrong and who is to blame. It is unfortunate that one of the groups who would face stern examination under this process are the very people who would have to initiate it.

Were this not the case it is probable that the inquiry would have begun months ago and that we might even have had an arrest or two by now.
