Absurd solution

YOU report (August 6) that grass fields can become ‘sinks’ for soaking up greenhouse gases, claiming carbon dioxide is considered the most offensive greenhouse gas.

In fact, methane is 20 times more potent as a greenhouse gas, but only has about a quarter of the effect because there is less of it.

Changes in grassland management may result in temporary absorption of CO2, but clearly the long-term effect has to be neutral. More importantly, destruction of bogs and higher temperatures result in huge emissions of methane and CO2. This is another typical example in a series of absurd solutions to global warming trumpeted by media and governments — an escapist strategy to avoid facing reality.
