Shocking level of abuse in mental hospitals

WITH the nation still reeling from the horrors revealed in the Ryan report on institutional abuse, it was shocking to learn recently that more than 2,000 assaults occurred in Irish mental hospitals and units run by the HSE over the past two years.

And also, according to the figures released by the hospitals and health care organisations, there have been at least 102 reported incidents of bullying, 76 complaints of sexual harassment, 66 attempted suicides by patients and 84 cases of patients being given the wrong dosage in these hospitals.

And all of that within just a two-year period.
