Ridiculous assertion on election result

IN his letter commenting on the election results, Mark Wakefield (June 16) suggested Fianna Fáil no longer has a mandate to govern as “the election statistics show how the people feel about the way our great nation has been run for the past 12 years”.

Ridiculous assertion on election result

To say these election results show the public are unhappy with how the country was run for the past 12 years is ridiculous.

If that is the case, why have the public voted FF into power for the past 12 years? And why did the public reaffirm their support for this government only two years ago in the general election?

It is general elections that choose the government – not local elections. The mandate won two years ago still stands.

While a huge aspect of the local election results was a protest vote against decisions made by the government in recent months, I do not believe the results represent a desire by the general public for FG to come to power.

If FG is so confident that it should be in power and that this is what the public wants, then why did Enda Kenny put in such a weak performance in the Dáil during the party’s motion of no confidence in the Government?

It should have been his finest moment but he made no impact and proved he is not ready to lead FG into office.
