THE fact that officials of Anglo-Irish Bank could borrow millions of euro without any accountability is a shameful flaw in the banking system.

Bankers must be held to account

It is one thing to borrow money for buying a family home. It is something very different to borrow money to invest in property to boost one's portfolio.

There needs to be legislation put in place so that there is no repetition of such an act. At the end of the day the public has to pay a price for such acts through increased taxes. People who have squandered public money need to account for it in the court of law.
