No debt to repay

I WAS very irritated by the mealy-mouthed, holier-than-thou political correctness of your editorial headlined ‘We have duty because of our own past (May 11)’.

No debt to repay

Just what do people imagine we owe to immigrants because of our own past? England owed the Irish far more than we do to immigrants coming here. We did not colonise anybody.

Irish emigrants had to find their own way in their host country. I doubt if they were allowed to abuse their hosts to the same extent as many immigrants have abused Ireland – the “soft touch of Europe”.

Your editorial should have spared as much thought for the many Irish homeless people who die on our own streets.
