Tobacco tax hikes

JOHN MALLON’S point on how tobacco taxes here incentivise smuggling (Irish Examiner Letters, March 27) is a valid one.

However, his suggestion that smokers in search of a bargain could legally buy six months’ supply in another EU country is off the mark.

Anyone bringing more than 800 duty-paid cigarettes into Ireland must pay duty on them unless they can prove that they are for their own personal use.
