The GAA celebrates - Happy birthday

THE greatest community and sporting organisation this country has seen celebrated a significant birthday yesterday. The GAA marked its 125th year with a series of events, each of which showed how deeply rooted that organisation is in our country. The celebrations were heart-felt, committed and entirely appropriate.

The GAA celebrates - Happy birthday

It was entirely apt too that another GAA milestone was passed when Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh marked 60 years as a broadcaster focussed on our national games. Though the GAA is 125 years old, only two voices could be described as being synonymous with the games. Ó Muircheartaigh’s and his predecessor’s, the late Mícheál Ó hEithir. Both brought passion and erudition to their work and enhanced many an occasion.

Even after 125 years we have a lot to learn from the example, courage and vision of the men who established this great organisation.
