National icon must be salvaged urgently
We are drip-fed slightly upbeat news items at irregular intervals, while every month that passes increases the danger of irreparable damage to this wonderful vessel.
It will be a tragedy for sail training as well as our maritime heritage if the vessel is not saved. Jack Tyrrell’s Asgard II is a proper sailing vessel whose design and construction was firmly rooted in the tradition of sail.
It should be raised and refitted to its original specification. This is technically and economically feasible. Now is the time for those who have sailed on Asgard II and hold it dear to call on the minister to take action. I am sure he will not want his name linked to the loss, by neglect or delay, of a beloved craft, a great icon for Ireland and a resource of hope for our young — and not so young — in the trying times ahead.
