Will of the people

I SUPPORT Nick Folley (Letters, December 22) on the mandate of 1918.

Will of the people

Perhaps your columnist Steven King might also explain why the Ulster unionists refused to accept the mandate for Home Rule in 1910 if they were so committed to democracy.

The refusal in 2008 to accept the Lisbon Treaty vote revealed the shallowness of the commitment to democracy on many sides.

It is surely time to respect “the will of the Irish people” — unreservedly and wholeheartedly.
