Nuclear option

IN your editorial of (October 21) you say “we cannot defer for a moment longer any measures that might make us less dependent on imported energy.”

The one vital measure we must take as soon as the nature of our impending energy crisis is fully understood by everyone, including our leaders, is to start planning a programme of nuclear power as part of our energy mix.

As you say, we are critically dependent on imported energy, typically from unreliable sources.

Nuclear fuel is available from secure sources such as Australia and Canada. Remarkably small quantities of it would be needed.

Nuclear power has been shown convincingly to be the cheapest form of energy. It is safe, it is clean, and it does not contribute to global warming.

What will convince us of its necessity — blackouts?
