Better to pick our politicians out of a hat

IT was obvious to anyone of even minimal intelligence that the US subprime mortgage fiasco would end with banks going bust and that, in Ireland, the housing boom would end with a slump, rising oil prices resulting in recession, and that growing battalions of SUVs would mean an increase in CO2 emissions.

But apparently none of it was obvious to those in Government who are incapable of anticipating the future and mainly concern themselves with taking money from the poor and giving it to the rich, if they are not waging war or destroying the environment.

In my view, ipso facto, anyone who wants political power is unsuitable to hold political office. The ability to speak in clichés, evasion and animal cunning are more important than intelligence
