Why rich kids should not pay college fees

THERE are a lot of arguments for and against reintroduction of educational fees for third-level students. It is understandable that people think somebody else — preferably the rich — should pay. Is that fair? I do not think so.

Why rich kids should not pay college fees

Firstly, rich people pay a lot in taxes and, like everybody else, are entitled to some return such as health service, education, etc.

The presumption that “PAYE workers subsidise tycoons’ kids (Letters, September 23) is nonsense. The rich have paid in advance for theirs kids’ education. People make their contribution to the State by paying taxes. This is their obligation and, in return, the State must treat them equally.
