Dirty word

IN his letter (September 15), Jason Fitzharris quite rightly encourages Fianna Fáil to make Ireland a member of CERN — the European organisation for nuclear research.

However, I doubt whether any political party would consider the idea as long as the horror word ‘nuclear’ appears in the organisation’s name. If only it had been built in a German-speaking location, then ‘nuclear’ would have been replaced by ‘kern’, which presumably wouldn’t frighten anyone, especially a politician.
