I READ with aversion your editorial headlined ‘Shell disruption — No support for protests’ (September 11).

When ‘criminal’ behaviour is fully justified

You state that protest becomes unacceptable when it involves illegal or criminal behaviour. I must disagree with you on this important matter.

When anti-war activists put their axes through the engines of US military planes at Shannon airport, they were subsequently acquitted of millions of euro worth of criminal damage on the grounds of lawful excuse.
