Vital steps needed to tackle drink crisis
It is reasonable to assume that there is a similar pattern countrywide.
It is well documented that alcohol is a factor in the region of 85% or such offences at weekends.
It is imperative that any proposed cutbacks not affect efforts to tackle our society’s chronic alcohol problem. Because of the substantial tax take from sales of alcohol there may be an insidious temptation to ignore the horrendous side effects for those directly and indirectly affected.
The extent of alcohol-related problems already cost Irish society in the region of €3 billion per year and the emotional cost is incalculable.
There has been enough talk, enough reports and studies. Alcohol-related problems increase in periods of economic downturn. Cutbacks would be counter-productive.
More effective project management of efforts is required.
Millions have already been spent with little obvious success.
Strictly enforced controlled accessibility, problem recognition, widespread structured educational intervention, consistent affirmation of low-volume drinkers and of non-drinkers are vital steps that need to be addressed immediately.
