Expensive taste of days that are gone

AFTER attending the Taste of Cork event in beautiful Cork City Jail last Saturday evening, I feel the event was a throwback to the heady days of the Celtic Tiger.

The organisers enticed the crowds with promises of free samples galore and an opportunity for local restaurants to showcase their fare.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be little more than restaurants resuming normal service to a captive audience.

The price of the minuscule portions was astonishing and the use of ‘event currency’ simply a means to minimise the time needed in providing change and thereby maximising the time taking in cash.

The series of festivals is called Taste of Ireland. A most appropriate name, I think. Ask any tourist.

I wonder what the ghosts of the patriots thought.
