Company highlights scourge of litter

BALLYMALOE Country Relish has decided to take public action against litter by funding a national and regional radio advertising campaign highlighting the negative impact of litter on business.

Company highlights scourge of litter

The advert, which is currently being broadcast, highlights the scourge of litter on the Irish countryside and is intended to shame and embarrass local authorities into taking much stronger action against litter.

In the last two months we have had two very important groups of overseas customers to our factory in Little Island, some visiting Ireland for the first time. However, the litter has got so bad on the roads that I found myself in a state of shame and embarrassment. This experience has led us to make the advert

We met with the Cork county manager last year to request litter removal. During the year other TDs and councillors also requested roadside cleaning, but as yet none has taken place.

It is unfair and inadequate of local authorities to expect a handful of caring people to keep a whole neighbourhood tidy and this leads to sporadic and inconsistent results with vast areas of untidy no man’s land.

The Government must urgently lead by example and county managers across the country must now respond by taking full responsibility to keep their areas litter-free.
