Councillors to blame for Limerick problems

THE spectre of internment for people engaged in antisocial behaviour or involved in crime gangs, as suggested by Limerick city councillor, is an alarmist response to a serious problem caused by Limerick City Hall policies.

Councillors to blame for Limerick problems

Fine Gael’s internment proposal is only a distraction from the real issues. While the problem of crime and antisocial behaviour is a serious one in some housing estates in Limerick, the fact is the situation was allowed to develop and fester by the local authority’s policies — and all city councillors must bear collective responsibility for the housing policies executed in their name, and approved by them over the years.

Building vast, faceless estates without any play or recreational facilities or social amenities add to the problem.
