IN his letter (January 9), Maurice Fitzgerald claims to speak for “many Catholics” in condemning the church leadership for its failure to address the many vices in our society.

He certainly does not speak for me. Nor does he speak for any Catholic that I know.

Allow me to bring the words of the Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, to Mr Fitzgerald’s attention: “We cannot as a society but express our horror at the revolting new culture of violence which now in Ireland is almost daily claiming lives in stabbings and murders”.
