Lisbon treaty referendum facts must be impartial

I refer to the article ‘FG: Government inaction puts EU treaty in danger’ (November 6). Fine Gael, in urging the Government to start a campaign to convince Irish voters to vote for the soon-to-be-proposed Lisbon Treaty, seems to be forgetting the McKenna judgment: it is illegal to use public funds to influence the outcome of a referendum.

Lisbon treaty referendum facts must be impartial

When the treaty is signed in Lisbon, the Government will set up a referendum commission to provide a public information document setting out the cases for and against the treaty.

I hope the Government will do a proper job in setting up clear ‘yes’ and ‘no’ sides, to provide each voter with clarity and understanding on the issue.
