Visitors impressed by ‘follow me’ driver

ON Friday, August 24, we lost our way to Douglas shopping centre in Cork. I was driving and when I realised I was in the wrong lane, I signalled apologetically with my hand to a driver in the other lane that I wanted to go in front of him.

Rather than the road rage I might expect back home, at the next set of lights the gentleman motioned to me to wind down my window, enquired where we were going, and then instructed us to follow him.

He went out of his way to take us right into the shopping centre car park, despite the fact that traffic was becoming extremely heavy and he was going to get stuck in it on his way back out.

To cap it all, we shook hands and he wished Wales good luck in the rugby World Cup. We have encountered many friendly people in Ireland over the years, but even though Cork is surely the friendliest county of all, this was a fantastic gesture.

We would like to thank him very much for his extraordinary display of helpfulness and friendliness. I hope he is one of your readers and will see this.

He has given us something to look back on with great fondness.
