The large growth in the Irish economy during the last eight years has led to a significant increase in consumption of raw materials and energy.

This country’s national greenhouse gas emissions currently exceed the Kyoto target by 23%, according to the official estimate of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Instead of decreasing, emissions went up by 17% in the 1997-2005 period. Various sectors contributed to the increases, but transport was by far the worst offender.
