Speed: gardaí give the game away

IT is astonishing that the gardaí are publishing details of locations of speed cameras. They claim this will prevent speeding — of course it will, but only where the cameras are.

Speed: gardaí give the game away

For the remaining 99.99% of the road network, it will only encourage speeding. Has it occurred to them that by advertising where the cameras are, they are also advertising where they aren’t? This follows a similar practice with radar speed monitoring — using day-glo jackets to make themselves visible from miles away. It is amazing they ever catch anyone.

In Britain, drivers know where the cameras are. They brake suddenly when they approach them, accelerating rapidly after they pass knowing they can exceed the speed limit with impunity. This is clearly dangerous and does little to prevent speeding. The idea that hidden speed cameras are an invasion of privacy is irrational.
