Bertie knows how to keep his distance

KEEP your friends close, but your enemies closer — that’s Fianna Fáil’s unwritten programme for government.

The day before leaving office, Dick Roche signed the Tara order, for which John Gormley will be held accountable. Under ordinary circumstances in any company, the boss is responsible ultimately for the actions of his or her employees.

But no one expects accountability from Bertie Ahern. There is not a murmur of regret from him regarding the Tara/Skryne Valley.

As the overtures towards Beverly Flynn prove, there is no such thing as sanction for bad behaviour in the Fianna Fáil bible.

With the continuation of co-location, the Galway tent and the traditional Irish welcome at Shannon airport, Bertie must have been aware of his mother’s warning to eat his ‘greens’.

Such cynicism on Bertie’s part cannot belie the fact the he is consciously running just a little faster than the Irish public’s attention span.
