Coming and going: a tale of two cities

I FLEW from Dublin and Copenhagen on business recently.

Coming and going: a tale of two cities

The comparsion between the two airports could not have been more pronounced.

Access to Dublin airport is at times literally a nightmare. I will spare you my personal horror story as I am sure you l have your own.

By contrast, Copenhagen provided a rail service, several bus services and an adequate supply of taxis. I made it from airport to city centre in 15 minutes.

Dublin airport is roughly the same distance from the city centre, but it takes a multiple of this time to get there.

Check-in desks in Dublin had queues snaking all around the place, but in Copenhagen they were adequately staffed and processing people on demand.

Security in Dublin again had a queue snaking along whereas in Copenhagen staff and x-ray machines were sufficiently numerous to meet demand as it arose.

Reclaiming baggage in Copenhagen was prompt and efficient, but on my return there was an unexplained delay in reclaiming my bag in Dublin.

I have been through many major European airports and I am constantly amazed at how Dublin has failed to meet international standards consistently over the years.

The Dublin Airport Authority should visit Copenhagen airport. There they could see how a modern European city airport should be built and managed.

On their return they could do a ‘lap of shame’ struggling through crowds of frustrated people in the usual queues.
