Selling of GAA pitch is a cause for sadness

AS a former secretary and player of Cloyne GAA club, it saddens me that the selling of “the field” is being considered by its executive.

Selling of GAA pitch is a cause for sadness

This field is steeped in Cloyne history and its sale would rob the youth of Cloyne of a magnificent asset. I believe that those who went before us, not just Christy Ring, would be appalled that, for economic reasons, this jewel should be taken from the people of Cloyne.

In the early seventies, I, as secretary, along with Chairman Donal Clifford and our committee, negotiated the purchase of the field.

We did this in the hope that it would remain a playing field for Cloyne’s youth in perpetuity. I am 35 years out of the town and am no longer a member, so perhaps I am a voice crying in the wilderness. I hope that the current members of the club, if they have any sense of history will think very carefully before “developing” what is already in my view, the perfect development, just as it is.

Perhaps, in this case “Ni thagann ciall roimh aois”
