Regulated taxi fares

THE taxi regulator states that fares have been fixed following extensive public consultation.

This is a novel method of determining the income of a group of citizens. One would not canvass parents on teachers’ pay or consult taxpayers on the income of public servants. The rate per kilometre will increase by 5.5% — the last increase was 21 months ago. There is no commitment to a further increase before 2008. Two-yearly fare increases with year-round fuel increases is regressive. Fares should be reviewed as necessary taking all factors into account.
