Evidence of collusion is there for all to see

AFTER last week’s Council of Europe report cited Ireland as colluding in the rendition process, the Taoiseach demanded the authors produce evidence of these allegations.

A cleaner at Shannon had the courage to report the truth. The US authorities did not inform the Irish Government.

Under the Convention Against Torture (CAT), Ireland has an obligation to ensure its territory is not being used for this purpose. It also has an obligation to bring criminal charges in such cases.

The Government prefers to accept the assurances of people who run a global system of gulags. It takes more courage to confront evil in our midst. The Government’s policy is “we won’t ask; please just say you don’t use Ireland”.

Any assurances by Bush, Rumsfeld, Rice or the CIA are not to be trusted. "

In 2003, the CIA abducted a Muslim cleric in Milan and transferred him to Egypt for torture; he is still there. The plane used in the abduction stopped at Shannon on its way back to the US.

Ireland is being used in the rendition process. Our political leaders say we are not part of this. Do you believe them?

The CIA and the Pentagon run a global chain of camps, from Gitmo and Abu Ghraib to places given names like the ‘Salt Pit’ in Afghanistan. These are war crimes on a scale not seen since WWII.

I was a Marine Corps rifleman in the Vietnam war. I volunteered twice for combat. I know prisoners are tortured. In Vietnam, they were shoved out of helicopters.

I am ashamed of what my country is doing in the world today.
