ON May 29 I arrived in Cork following a transatlantic voyage on the Queen Mary. I had always wanted to see the beauty of Ireland and had heard of the kindness and generosity of its people.

Little did I realise I would soon encounter such kindness. I hired a car to see the sights. Being an American, I had to adjust quickly to the car and to the differences in driving practices.

I had just entered Douglas when I stopped to ask a lady for directions. Afterwards, my car would not start. I asked a couple, who were walking their dog, for help. They were named Ann and John (I don’t know their surname), and their cocker spaniel was Sandy.
