Tourism needs a positive approach

THE assessment of the tourism industry by John Hearne (Irish Examiner, May 19) certainly hit the mark. There is no doubt that the issues of access and regional spread that he raised are very relevant and deserve an airing.

Tourism needs a positive approach

It is certain also that the industry is facing big challenges and it is imperative that we meet them.

I am confident we will prevail even if, as a lifetime of experience working in the industry has taught me, it does not come easy.

Every season brings its own challenges and it is possible always to point to something that could have a detrimental effect.

At this stage of the current season, let’s retain a positive outlook and desist from highlighting the downside of the business — something which, regrettably, has been a constant feature of previous years.

This type of negativity is of no benefit to this vital national industry.
