Labour’s role in Rising was acknowledged

I WAS disappointed to read Senator Joanna Tuffy’s recent claim (Irish Examiner, April 26) that the Taoiseach, in his comments on the 1916 commemorations, omitted the central role of the Labour Party.

In the interests of accuracy, it should be pointed out that on a number of occasions the Taoiseach spoke positively about the huge contribution which the Labour movement made to 1916, and especially the pivotal role played by James Connolly.

In an interview with the Evening Echo on April 13, the Taoiseach pointedly referred to the fact that Connolly, as well as being a signatory of the Proclamation, was a founding member of the Labour Party.
