East Cork ideal for decentralisation

THERE is much debate at national level on the decentralisation of Government departments. While the iron is hot, permit me to put forward Midleton and Cobh for inclusion in this programme.

East Cork ideal for decentralisation

I had considered including Youghal, where 1,675 jobs have been lost in the past seven years, — with a consequential shortfall of €20 million annually in the local economy — but Youghal has got a promise of 36 jobs from the decentralisation programme, although this is nothing more than crumbs from the master’s table.

When we speak of job shortages in east Cork, we are immediately reminded that Carrigtwohill is now an industrial zone, with more jobs to follow. Notwithstanding the job prospects for Carrigtwohill, it is imperative that priority be afforded to the northern relief road and the rail-line for Midleton, before any further residential and industrial development should be allowed.
