President Donald Trump is now a real threat to world peace

Hollywood’s back catalogue has too many films about how power can push people to the edge of sanity or even beyond. 

In no particular order, and there are many, many more: Citizen Kane, The Big Country, Comes A Horseman, Absolute Power, Primary Colors, and even the dodgy Gladiator, all show what happens when a personality incapable of restraint, or basic moral judgement, achieves incomparable, unchecked power.

It’s 53 years since Stanley Kubrick introduced Dr Strangelove to a jumpy, Cold War world. Nevertheless, it is scant consolation that it has taken more than half a century for life to imitate art.
