Despite that, Irish people who could afford to buy a home were culturally attuned to do so. Figures released this weekend show how very difficult that challenge has become for most people, especially those who wish to live in our cities.

House prices rose by an average of 4.3% since Christmas and by an eye-watering 8.7% in Dublin.
