RTÉ seeks security in a changing world

IN terms of scale, Ireland has always been and always will be a tiny television and radio market.

RTÉ seeks security in a changing world

Our population is so small that our national broadcaster — RTÉ — struggles when compared with better-resourced stations across the Irish Sea. The imperative behind that struggle is that RTÉ, because of, or despite of, its public service remit, needs to be all things to all couch dwellers. It needs to provide everything from frothy entertainment like Dancing With the Stars to Nova, Lyric radio’s once a week nod to contemporary music.

It also needs to subsidise TG4 and Raidió na Gaeltachta, the Irish language services that will never be commercially viable because of their minority viewing figures. It must, and in today’s world this may be its greatest challenge, also deliver a robust and comprehensive news service.
