TV star Gráinne Seoige is expected to file papers next week in her bid to succeed outgoing Fianna Fáil TD Eamon Ó Cuív.
The veteran presenter is seeking the Fianna Fáil nomination to run in Galway West.
Mr Ó Cuív confirmed to the that Ms Seoige has made clear her intention to seek the nomination. She will need five members of the Galway West organisation to back her. Mr Ó Cuív would not be drawn on whether Ms Seoige will win the nomination.
He said that the membership will decide that and that they are "mature adults".

Mr Ó Cuív, a grandson of Éamon de Valera, has served in Leinster House for more than 30 years.
In a statement released last month, Mr Ó Cuív said: “After deep consideration, I have decided not to seek a nomination to stand in the next general election. In the meantime I will continue to work as usual.”
He joins almost 30 sitting TDs from across the political divide who have announced that they will not be seeking re-election.
Paying tribute to Mr Ó Cuív, Tánaiste Micheál Martin described the Galway West TD as “an outstanding parliamentarian”.
