Taoiseach Simon Harris discusses Gaza with Israeli president in first phone call

Simon Harris also informed Isaac Herzog about Ireland's intention to recognise the State of Palestine in the coming weeks.
Taoiseach Simon Harris has “expressed deep concern” to the Israeli president over the potentially catastrophic impact of the ongoing assault on Rafah in the Gaza Strip.
Mr Harris and Israeli president Isaac Herzog held a phone call on Friday, the first since Mr Harris became Taoiseach last month.
In an Irish readout of the call, Mr Harris outlined to Mr Herzog Ireland’s position on the ongoing war in Gaza.
In particular, Mr Harris set out the Government's desire to see an “immediate ceasefire and urgent and unhindered access for humanitarian aid”.
“He expressed deep concern about the potential for catastrophe in Rafah,” the readout says.
Mr Harris also informed Mr Herzog about Ireland's intention to recognise the State of Palestine in the coming weeks, while also saying peace and security for the two nations can only come through a two-state solution.
“The Taoiseach made clear Ireland’s abhorrence of Hamas and Ireland’s support for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages,” the readout adds, while also confirming the two leaders would remain in touch.
