Gardaí are investigating an incident of criminal damage at a student property near the University of Limerick after footage showing extensive destruction inside the house was circulated online.

The incident occurred at a property in College Court in the early hours of Wednesday, October 7. It is understood that the house was vacant.

Videos widely shared on social media show two young men throwing furniture through a window, shattering the glass, while others are heard laughing.

The footage shows extensive damage inside the house, including holes in walls and damage to part of the ceiling.

A Garda spokesperson told the Irish Examiner: "A technical examination of the scene has been conducted. Investigations are ongoing."

Some of the social media clips have since been taken down.

One video was filmed by a young woman using Sabrina Carpenter's song House Tour, part of a social media trend in which users showcase their homes.

A University of Limerick spokesperson said it promotes responsible behaviour and takes incidents of anti-social conduct seriously.

While the vast majority of students make a positive contribution to the local community, the university acknowledged that issues such as property damage and public disorder are a source of serious concern.

The spokesperson said complaints involving students are investigated under the university's code of conduct.

"Students have been urged to be mindful of their actions and the impact they have on the community around them," the spokesperson said.
