Young musicians in Cork set to benefit as Ed Sheeran sets up cross-border musical project

The Kabin Studio, the Cork music collective behind viral worldwide hit The Spark, is set to help inspire a new generation of young musicians through the Ed Sheeran Foundation's first project in Ireland.

The cross-border North South Sounds 2026 programme will bring children and young people from Cork and Belfast together through songwriting, performance, and community engagement.

It aims to encourage young musicians to blend influences and genres.

The project, which includes non-residential summer camps and gigs led by young musicians in Cork city and Belfast, will run until December.

“I’m so happy to be bringing the Ed Sheeran Foundation to Ireland,” Sheeran said.

“I’ve spent loads of time in the country over the years.

“Having family roots there, it’s a place that’s always been special to me.

“Every child should have the opportunity to learn and take part in music, and we’re continuing our work to help make that a reality. The first project kicks off at the Fleadh on Monday.

“I played the festival last year and have such fond memories of it.

“If you’re there, go and check out some of the incredible young talent.” 

The project is a collaboration between the Ed Sheeran Foundation and educators from Music Generation Cork City, in partnership with Creative Tradition and The Kabin Studio, and the Oh Yeah Centre.

The project will launch with performances by 50 young people at the Fleadh Cheoil at Belfast City Hall on Monday, August 3.

Sheeran performed alongside local artists at the traditional music festival last year at The Sky and The Ground pub in Co Wexford.
