Cork traditional Irish singer Seán Ó Sé will be commemorated with a concert during Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan in Waterford on Thursday.

The Ballylickey native died in January, three days shy of his 90th birthday.

A former member of Ceoltóirí Chualann, he was renowned for singing An Puc Ar Buile, an Irish comic song which became a surprise hit single in the early 1960s.

He qualified as a teacher and was principal of St Mary’s on the Hill in Knocknaheeny on Cork’s northside. Last autumn, he was presented with an honorary doctorate by UCC in recognition of his immense contribution to Irish traditional music and heritage.

On Thursday evening, St Carthage’s Cathedral in Lismore will host the commemorative concert at 8pm.

It will feature Torcán, Take Note Choir, and Cór Fear na nDéise, with performances from Seosamh Ó Críodáin and former senator Labhrás Ó Murchú.

Organisers said it will be a “special evening celebrating the life, music and legacy of Seán Ó Sé.”

They added: “Set within the magnificent surroundings of St. Carthage’s Cathedral, this commemorative event promises an uplifting programme of music, reflection and celebration, paying tribute to Seán Ó Sé’s enduring contribution to Irish culture and song.”

Ballyduff/Ballinvella/Ballysaggart branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Éireann are hosting the Fleadh Cheoil, attracting musicians from across Munster to take part in competitions.

There will also be street entertainment from a gig rig in the town during the week, which organisers said will offer “the perfect opportunity to soak up the unique spirit of the Munster Fleadh, discover exceptional traditional talent, and enjoy the warmth, creativity and sense of community that make this annual celebration so special”.
