Woman in hospital after alleged stabbing in Cork suburb now in a stable condition

A woman who was allegedly stabbed by a man she knew in a Cork City suburb is in a stable condition following an operation for her injuries.

A man in his 20s had waited for the woman, also aged in her 20s, to return home to Churchyard Lane in Ballinlough about 7pm on Tuesday and then attacked her with a knife.

Passersby witnessed the attack and alerted gardaí, who came from Togher and Anglesea Street Garda stations.

Passersby also helped the woman at the scene.

A doctor who was passing gave first aid to the victim.

A knife was retrieved from the scene, it is understood.

Gardaí arrested the suspect at the scene and detained him for questioning.

He was still being questioned at Togher Garda Station on Wednesday evening.

The victim and the suspect had been in a relationship before, it is understood.

The woman suffered serious injuries to her arm in the attack. She required surgery for her injuries on Wednesday.

It is believed her arms were injured while she tried to defend herself from the attacker.

Superintendent Gary McPolin of Togher Garda Station has appealed for any witnesses to the incident or for anyone with video footage, including dashcam footage, taken from Churchyard Lane, Ballinlough area of Cork City on Tuesday evening to come forward.
