Man accused of stealing €1.7k in cash from an open till in Cork City supermarket

A large amount of cash was allegedly snatched from an open cash register at a Cork City supermarket.

DPP directions are awaited in the case where it is alleged that a man snatched €1,710 in cash from a till at the Lidl supermarket on Bishopstown Road. Eddie O’Donoghue, 34, of Cork Simon Community is charged with carrying this burglary at Lidl and other offences. 

The background to the supermarket case was outlined at Cork District Court. On May 3 2025, a Lidl staff member had her till open and unattended while dealing momentarily with another customer. 

A male customer came over and put his hand into the till and removed a large number cash notes from the till. This man then put this money into his pocket. 

The staff member initially didn't realise anything was amiss and she served the male suspect as normal but about 15 minutes later she discovered there was a large number of cash notes missing from her till and she called the manager on duty.

CCTV showed the male stealing the cash from the till. Gardaí were contacted and it was established that €1,710 cash notes had been stolen from the till. 

He was gone by the time the incident was discovered. The cash was not recovered. Apart from this alleged incident there are other charges against the accused including:

• April 6 at Vibes and Scribes, theft of the Marymount Hospice charity donation box, roughly €200 
• June 15 at Dillon’s Cross, pharmacy, Old Youghal Road, theft of €55 worth of items.
• July 3, handing a stolen phone at Crosses Green, Cork.
• July 18, burglary at the Sun Studio Tan and Nail Clinic, Pope’s Quay, Cork, where it is alleged that a total of €1,000 in cash was stolen.

On the application of Sergeant John Dineen, Judge David Waters adjourned the case until October 22 to allow time for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
