Public consultation opens on redevelopment of former Mars Cinema site in Kilrush

Proposed redevelopment aims to transform the historic Kilrush site into a multi-use community and cultural hub

The proposed redevelopment of the former Mars Cinema in Kilrush, Co Clare, will now move to public consultation.

Clare County Council has confirmed that a Part 8 planning application is being progressed for the redevelopment of the former Mars Cinema and Dance Hall site on Frances Street, which has been identified as a key opportunity project within the Kilrush Town Centre First Plan.

Plans include the integration of an adjacent residential property into the development, alongside the redevelopment of the wider site to accommodate a range of uses, including commercial, community, educational, cultural, sports, heritage, and office space.

The development would see the regeneration of the site as a multi-use facility serving the local community and supporting the ongoing revitalisation of Kilrush town centre.

The proposal also includes enhancements to the existing Art Deco entrance and public realm improvements along Frances Street. 

The development is located within Kilrush’s Architectural Conservation Area and has been designed to respect and enhance the character of the area.

Carmel Kirby, director of services for the West Clare Municipal District at Clare County Council, said: "The progression of the Mars Cinema project to Part 8 marks a significant step forward in the regeneration of this important site in Kilrush. 

"This proposal presents an opportunity to revitalise this vacant heritage landmark building and create a vibrant multi-use space for the community."

John O’Malley, senior executive officer for the Kilrush Electoral Area, Clare County Council, said: "We are keen to ensure that the public has a full opportunity to engage with the proposals as part of the statutory consultation process. 

"This marks the next step in the ongoing development of plans for the Mars Cinema site, following extensive engagement with the local community and stakeholders as part of the Feasibility Study and the Town Centre First Plan."

Submissions and observations from the public will be accepted up to Monday, June 29.

The plans are available for public inspection at Áras Contae an Chláir in Ennis, the West Clare Municipal District Offices in Kilrush, and online via the council’s consultation portal.
